Analyzing Primary Sources: Harriet Tubman

What was it like to live during the life and times of Harriet Tubman?

Take a moment to explore the primary sources in the activity below. As you examine the images, jot down what you see, what you think, and what you wonder. On the final slide of the activity, you may export your ideas to a Word document or print your responses.

Now, watch the following video clip to learn about Harriet Tubman. Perhaps some of your questions may be answered. As you watch, notice the primary sources that are used to convey what life was like for her. Take note of your thoughts and feelings as you watch and observe the images used to help tell her story.

Revisit some of the images from the video. As you read about these images, think about which images strike you as most memorable or most important for showing what life was like for Harriet Tubman.

How do you analyze primary sources using the RISE analysis tool?

Making personal connections to historical information helps us to make sense of what we are learning and to develop empathy toward the people and events of the past.

Now you will learn how to use the RISE analysis tool to analyze primary sources related to Harriet Tubman’s life. Remember, RISE is an acronym that stands for Reflection, Inquiry, Self-Awareness, and Empathy.

Follow this example as we analyze a Runaway Ad. While some parts of primary source analysis are objectiveA, not related to personal feelings, other parts of the analysis are subjective, based on an individual’s opinions, thoughts, and experiences. The analysis in the example below includes both objective and subjective information from one individual’s point of view. You can use it as a model for how to approach primary source analysis, but you are encouraged to use your own thoughts, beliefs, and opinions as you interpret and draw conclusions about the historical information presented in this activity.

Download the RISE Empathy Framework and Analysis Tool and practice completing it as you follow along with the model.

Now that you have seen a model of how to use the RISE analysis tool with a source about Harriet Tubman, proceed to the next page to analyze primary sources related to the life of another great hero, Frederick Douglass.
