Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
  • Learn about social change.
  • Learn about the different roles we can take to change our communities.
  • Map out your values, roles, and skills.
  • Identify how you can contribute your roles and skills.

Welcome! In the following activities, you will learn about the Social Change Ecosystem Map, a framework developed by Deepa Iyer, an activist, and writer who works at a nonprofit organization called the Building Movement Project. Ms. Iyer wrote this lesson to help you know your role in creating social change.

Social change cannot happen on an individual level. It happens when we are connected to others and working for a common goal. Civil Rights Activist Grace Lee Boggs reminds us, “We never know how our small activities will affect others through the invisible fabric of our connectedness…it’s always about critical connections.”
